Why Focus on Relationships?
Soldiers, Especially, Need Better Relationships
Social relationships are an important factor in personal happiness. Unfortunately, in today’s military, characterized by increased deployments and increased ability to communicate, there is a communication strain between Soldiers and those they care about. These relationships can be strengthened, thus increasing the perceived happiness levels of Soldiers, not only in theater but at home as well.
As the research shows, relationships matter and can affect Soldiers not just improve their familial skills, but improve how they communicate with their leaders and subordinates. Improved relationships can also improve their health, seen with lowered PTSD symptoms. With positive relationships being such a force multiplier, it is important to prepare our Soldiers with skills that will improve their relationship building skills. These skills should extend beyond the family and include basic human-to-human interactions. |
